Are You Thriving? The Power of Looking After Your Mental Health

Christine

As Mental Health Month draws to a close, it’s worth hitting pause to ask, are you truly thriving?

The World Health Organisation defines mental health as “a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn and work well, and contribute to their community.”

Psychologist Martin Seligman, Director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, reminds us that nurturing our mental health isn’t only about reducing stress, but about cultivating what helps us flourish: engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment.

PERMA

At 3Minds, we believe thriving is built on these foundational principles. It’s about having the energy to engage with life, the creativity to imagine possibilities, and the clarity to make meaningful choices in every sphere of life, from work to home and everything in between.

When we consistently look after our mental health in ways that matter to us as individuals, we don’t just cope, we cultivate the conditions to live well and lead well.

Energy: The Fuel to Live Boldly

Energy is the power and ability to be physically and mentally active. It fuels our capacity to show up at work, at home and in our communities.

But energy isn’t infinite. It ebbs and flows. It expands when we’re connected to purpose and contracts when we’re stretched too thin. Our energy reflects the balance between what replenishes us and what drains us, and that balance can shift quickly in the pace of everyday life.

The key to sustaining that balance, and ultimately to thriving, is momentum over motivation: building steady, healthy routines that help us restore and maintain our energy, even on challenging days.

A personal energy audit – ask yourself:

  • What gives you energy: people, activities or environments?
  • How much time have you spent engaging with these lately?
  • What will next week look like if you intentionally make space for them?

When we nurture our energy, we strengthen the foundation for everything else including resilience, connection and joy.

Creativity: A Spark That Fuels Life and Leadership

Creativity is more than art. It’s the ability to generate fresh and valuable ideas by connecting things in new ways. It’s how we find joy in small moments, solve everyday problems, and see potential where others see obstacles.

When we look after our mental health, we create the space for curiosity

and play, which are essential ingredients for creativity. Whether you’re designing a strategy, cooking dinner or planning your next adventure, creativity helps us approach life with openness and optimism.

Creativity also plays a powerful role in our work. It fuels inn

ovation, strengthens problem solving and helps us see challenges through a different lens. When leaders and teams make room for creative thinking, they unlock new ways to collaborate, adapt and grow, qualities that are vital in times of change.

Creativity lives at the heart of flourishing. It is both a mindset and a practice that keeps life rich, purposeful and evolving.

Explore your creativity:

  • How do you experience creativity: through ideas, conversations, problem solving or making things?
  • When was the last time you gave yourself permission to play, experiment or imagine freely?

Clarity of Thought: The Anchor in a Busy World

Clarity of thinking allows us to see beyond noise and complexity, to pause, reflect and choose our response. It’s the mental space that helps us separate what matters from what merely distracts.

We can think about clarity of thinking through the lens of Daniel Kahneman’s two systems of thought. System 1 is fast, intuitive and automatic, guiding our everyday choices and rapid responses. System 2 is slower, more deliberate and analytical, helping us to reason, evaluate and make considered decisions when situations are complex or high stakes.

When we’re rested, connected and considered, we are primed to realise when we need to consciously activate the slow thinking of System 2. This enables us to navigate fluidly between these two systems of thinking and use the one that best serves the situation. This dynamic balance underpins sound judgement and effective leadership.

For example, a leader facing a major organisational change, such as a team restructure or service redesign, benefits from engaging System 2 thinking: slowing down to examine data, consider multiple perspectives and weigh the human and strategic implications before acting. This deliberate approach reduces bias, builds trust and leads to decisions that are both thoughtful and sustainable.

Clarity of thought gives us the confidence to know when to rely on intuition and when to pause and analyse, a critical capability for anyone leading in today’s complex world.

Reflect on this:

How often do you give yourself the time to slow down your thinking, to reflect, consider options and make choices with greater clarity?

Consistently looking after our mental health strengthens three essential capacities for thriving: energy, creativity and clarity of thought. It highlights how nurturing these areas helps us live and lead with greater balance, purpose and insight. Drawing on positive psychology and practical reflection, it reminds us that wellbeing is the foundation for sustained growth and effective leadership.
